Ask Eileen: Dirty Dishes & the Power of Bleach

Question: I left the dishes in the sink for about a week and now there appears to be black mold growing on my dishes and in my sink. Am I going to have to throw out all of my dishes and silverware?

Answer: No need to throw the baby out with the bathwater.  Unless they are chipped, cracked or somehow broken most dishes can always be salvaged.  Rinse off the excess mold and debris.  Mix bleach and hot water to a ratio of 3/4 cup bleach to 1 Gallon of water.  Wash the dishes and silverware in this mixture. Drain. And then re-wash with your normal dish washing liquid and hot water.  Make sure to wash out your sink with the mixture.  I would wear gloves for this – the bleach is not good on the hands or the manicures.  In the future try developing the habit of washing the dishes as you go…perhaps your can avoid creating science experiments in your sink!

Use this same method on any dishes, cookware, bakeware or silverware that you buy second hand…just to be safe.

Keep a spray bottle with this same bleach and water solution handy as part of your everyday cleaning supplies to wipe down door knobs, faucets, bathrooms, telephones, remotes and any other area that your family touches at lot.  This solution will kill everything from cold viruses to Salmonella to the the HIV virus.
